West Texas and eastern New Mexico

Llano Estacado

The Llano Estacado ("Staked Plains") of west Texas and eastern New Mexico marks the southernmost extent of the High Plains of North America. It is one of the largest expanses of near-featureless terrain in the U.S. and one of the largest tablelands on the continent. The cliff on the north facing the Canadian river was seen by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1541 on his way east from Cíbola leading him to name the plateau the Llano Estacado, or Palisaded Plain.

Bandera Pass is an historic portal through the hills that separate the watersheds of the Medina and Guadalupe rivers, that used for centuries by Indians and later European soldiers, settlers, and explorers.  It is located on State Highway 173, a few miles south of Camp Verde, near the current boundary between Medina and Kerr Counties.

Pavo Real Site

The Pavo Real site is a stratified multi-component archeological site located on the east bank of Leon Creek near Loop 1604 in northwest San Antonio. Excavations at this site indicate long-term Paleo-Indian (12000-7000 B.C.) and Archaic (7000 B.C.-AD. 500) occupations.

Dead Man's Hole

Dead Man’s Hole is a natural sinkhole located a few miles from Marble Falls, Texas. Following the Civil War it was used to dispose of the bodies of murdered and lynched men. The remains of a total of seventeen bodies have been recovered from Dead Man's Hole.

Devil's Sinkhole

The Devil's Sinkhole is a collapsed cave that provides a home for millions of bats. The property has been a State Natural Area since 1985. The Devil's Sinkhole can only be visited through guided tours. A visitor's center is located on the courthouse square in Rocksprings, Texas.

Packsaddle Mountain, five miles southwest of Kingsland on Highway 71 in Llano County, Texas.

Packsaddle Mountain

The battle of Packsaddle Mountain occurred on August 4, 1873 at the foot of Packsaddle Mountain, five miles southwest of Kingsland on Highway 71 in Llano County, Texas. It was the last Indian Battle in this region of Texas.

Pegleg Crossing

Pegleg Crossing is an hourglass-shaped pass through the hills were McDougal Creek joins San Saba River. For many years it was a frequently used ford on the San Saba River, and was part of the Great Western Cattle Trail.
